I once remember a wise friend of mine once said “Pascal, if humans didn’t need to eat, we would all be rich.”

Save Money on Your Groceries

Obviously, I did not take what she’d said literally, but it got me thinking. If `I could save cash on groceries, it would be beneficial. Most us aim to eat healthily, without braking the bank. I regularly keep track of the food items in my pantry.  Over time, I have worked out a few hacks on how to do this without feeling cranky or deprived. With the rise of the cost of living in everybody’s minds, there has there been a better time to review your weekly shop.

When adopting methods to save cash on groceries, it can be fun.  I now view food shopping as a game, it’s all to do with your mindset. One of my favourite tips on saving money on groceries, to shop in an upscale supermarkets after 4pm. This works a treat. I even name the reduced aisle; “The scavenger aisle.”

I will admit, in the beginning my children were indifferent, towards the whole yellow sticker thing. One time, I came home with exotic food. I actually had trouble pronouncing certain foods. My kids were very impressed. I was treated as a legend for a few hours. One of my best shops was when I came home with:

  • Mangos
  • Pheasants
  • Trifles
  • Scotch Eggs
  • Curry
  • Mediterranean roast vegetables
  • Lamb chops
  • Fresh fish (and they were huge)
  • & More

It all came down to less than £20. I was able to freeze many of these items. Yes, the yellow stickers rock! Let’s simply say, we had some unusual buffet lunches!

The Discounted Food Section is Your Friend

I find it hard to remember a time when I didn’t save money on groceries.  On most days, there are bargains to be had, at most supermarkets.  A lot more people are aware of the reduced food section.  I have even witnessed quite a few scuffles from time to time.

Personally, I have noticed that supermarkets are now beginning to discount on the actual shelves, instead of piling all the reduced items on a dedicated shelf.

You may save money your groceries over the course of a year, using the above tips.

Save Money on Groceries at Every Opportunity

Once every two weeks, I’ll run an inventory on the freezer. If I run out of veggies and vegetarian minced meat, I’ll put that on my list. If you have kids, why not ask them for help with the inventory. I’m sure they’ll go for it.

I have the bad habit of freezing herbs, but I find them months later, when they are dried up. To fix this, I place my herbs right in front of the freezing rack. I store fresh herbs in freezer bags and put a little olive oil in the freezer bag, then I seal it. The herbs seem to freeze better this way. In addition, the ready-made herbs are ready for cooking.
