As you air out your lawn the process will get oxygen to the roots of the plant. For this, you could use a mechanical aerator which will be more efficient.

When mowing the lawn, try to avoid cutting it too short. Reduce the shear height to ½ inch below the standard summer shear height. Leave these clippings from your final mowing on the lawn. They can be used as mulch for the grass and help protect against the harsh winter.

Rake the lawn, but don’t lift all the debris. Make sure you don’t leave a large pile of grass that could smother the lawn.

You want to make sure your mower is well maintained and that it is stored properly.

Turn off all your sprinklers and also drain the hoses. You do not want the water to freeze during the winter because it may damage your lawn. Pipes may burst because water expands as it freezes. It is also wise to winter proof your home.
